EXPERIENCE
Marin Academy | February 2017 – March 2017     San Rafael, CA
Aided in Marin Academy’s annual Minicourse program, a unique event where students and faculty immerse themselves in activities of broad educational value to a degree that is not possible during the regular school year. Minicourses come in many styles but all have the same goal of the enrichment of students’ lives and expansion of their awareness in the world. The Design/Build minicourse was an introductory design course that took a glimpse into the professional fields of industrial design and furniture design. The students dove in by designing and building cardboard furniture.
Day in the life: Presentation of the design process to students, facilitation of brainstorming, sketching, observational walks, small scale prototyping, peer to peer critiques, fabrication advice, as well as aided in tours to the Museum of Craft & Design and other industrial design firms in the SF Bay area
Results: Not only did I assist a group of 10 high schoolers sketch, prototype, test, and build cardboard furniture, but I also saw the students slowly become aware of how the design process and teamwork can be used to solve everyday problems and develop a new appreciation and awareness of design.
